What to know before buying a hot tub?

Arvo Juhkov | 01.06.2025

Buying a hot tub is a significant investment that requires careful consideration. First, you should determine the purpose and intended use of the tub. It’s important to consider how often and in what conditions you plan to use it – only in summer or all year round? Also think about how many people will use it at once, as this affects the size and water capacity of the tub.

When choosing materials, it’s good to know that classic wooden hot tubs made from spruce, larch, or thermowood offer a natural and traditional look but require more maintenance. Tubs made from plastic or fiberglass are easier to maintain and resistant to moisture and weather.

As a modern and durable option, stainless steel hot tubs are also available.

When it comes to heating, you need to choose a suitable option. Wood-fired tubs are ideal for those seeking a traditional experience, though they take more time to heat. Electric heating is more convenient and faster but requires a power connection and can be more expensive to run.

Some tubs offer hybrid solutions, allowing both wood and electric heating.

If you plan to use your hot tub in winter, choose a model with proper insulation. This helps maintain water temperature and reduces heating costs. A cover is also essential, as it minimizes heat loss and keeps out dirt.

Planning the hot tub location is also crucial. Make sure the ground is level and access to water and electricity is easy. Drainage solutions are also important.

For luxury-seeking users, additional features such as a bubble system, massage jets, or LED lighting can create a cozy atmosphere. A water filter ensures clean water, especially with frequent use.

Lastly, pay attention to budget and warranty. Hot tub prices vary based on material, size, and features. Make sure the chosen product has a sufficient warranty covering both the structure and heating system.

Are all parts included for self-assembly of the hot tub?

All necessary components are included in the basic package, and our product sheet outlines what is included. Additional accessories can always be ordered to enhance your hot tub experience.

Do I need an electrician to connect the hot tub’s electrical equipment?

Yes, for connecting the filter system and electric heater, we recommend hiring a certified electrician. This ensures that all connections comply with safety standards and that the electrical system functions properly. An electrician can also check whether your household’s power system can handle the load, preventing overload or safety hazards. In some cases, a separate power circuit may be required, especially for more powerful heating systems. But there’s no need to worry – our specialists will provide clear instructions to ensure a smooth purchasing experience.

Do I need equipment for unloading?

For hot tubs and barrel saunas up to 2.4 meters in length, no special unloading equipment is needed – unloading is done via tail lift using a pallet jack. However, for products over 2.4 meters, the buyer must arrange suitable unloading equipment, such as a crane or forklift. We recommend checking in advance that the unloading location is spacious and accessible to avoid delays or extra costs.

How often should the water be changed in a hot tub?

The frequency of water changes depends on factors such as water quality, usage frequency, and maintenance practices. If you use tap or well water, its composition – such as iron content – can greatly affect quality. Outdoor temperature, tub location, and weather also play a role. Using a cover helps reduce contamination by protecting the water from dirt and dust.

If the tub is used occasionally and the water can later be reused, for example, for garden irrigation, it may be sufficient to change the water every 1–2 days. In this case, a filter or chemical cleaners may not be necessary. For longer-term use, regular maintenance is essential – use filters, cleaning agents like chlorine, and keep the water pH between 7.2–7.6. To monitor water quality more accurately, special devices are available that provide detailed information on water parameters.

How to clean a hot tub?

Regular cleaning ensures your hot tub’s longevity and water hygiene. Start by draining the tub and checking that the drainage system works properly. Remove larger debris like leaves and branches by hand, then wash the surfaces with a soft sponge or brush using cleaning products suitable for the tub’s material. Avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent damage.

If your tub has a filter system, remove and clean or replace the filter as needed. Use limescale removers carefully to avoid damaging the material. Rinse the tub thoroughly to remove any cleaning residue, and disinfect if necessary to eliminate bacteria and microbes. If you’re not using the tub immediately, dry it out and leave it open for ventilation to prevent mold and moisture damage.

For wooden tubs, maintain the wooden parts regularly by oiling or treating them to prevent drying and cracking. Finally, refill the tub with clean water, check its quality, and add chemicals if needed to keep the water clean. This way, your hot tub will remain in excellent condition and ensure a pleasant experience.
